how do you substract one part from another

Unread post by Johan Jonker »

Maybe I am not used to the TopSolid userinterface yet (I am a new user).
I have to define a complex object and thought to build it from several parts.
Some parts have to be added to the base part while others have to be subtracted from it.
So I prepares some parts. But I don't know how to subtract one part from another.
How does it have to be done?

Hi Johan:

The Boolean functions are found under the Shape tab....Shape/Boolean (the Union, Subtraction, and Intersection options are found in the main dialog window).

Hello Brian,
Thanks for reacting.
I know where to find it but I don't know how to use is. I think it is clumpsy.

I want to do this part c = part A - part B
1) I select part A
2) then select the suctract dialog
3) and then?

I see a tools field that is empty. Do I have to get part B in there?

Hi Johan:

Yes, you will have to indicate which solid is the tool and which is your part.

And how do I indicate that?

Hi Johan:

Ah, now I see your problem. I *think* (but I'm not certain....) you will want to make an assembly document containing the part(s) you want to act upon, and then perform your Boolean operations in the assembly document. I believe that you can also trim one part with another inside an assembly document. I had initially thought that you were working with multiple solid bodies contained in one part file....

Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian
I tried that but did not succeed in anything else than just adding parts together.

Hi Johan:

Once you have created the assembly containing the parts you wish to modify, you need to make one (or more) of your parts "modifiable" (Modeling/Local Shapes/Make Locally Modifiable). After that you can use the Boolean operators (Modeling/Local Shapes/Boolean) to modify your part(s) within the assembly.

Attached is a simple example file for you...enjoy. Let me know if this does the trick, OK?

Hi
I see the problem. You designed each shape as separate parts. So to use them as booleans you would need to assemble them, make an assembly neighborhood out of them, and then you can do the booleans in the part doc or as an inplace edit.

Let me ask you do these shapes need to be separate parts? If not, draw all shapes in one part document and then you can do a Boolean with them more easily.

Hope this helps

Hello,

If you don't want to create a new document, you can also include directly your second part in the first with that:
