rotary 4th axis - using SIDE of straight tool

Unread post by scottatTS »

we have an outboard rotary 4th axis (lathe) and we want to cut some dowels by using the SIDE of a nice Vortex spiral bit. Problem is TS only allows us to cut using the END of the tool - completely unacceptable. We cant seem to get around this. We'd like to chain-sweep along the LENGTH of the stock, NOT go round and around the stock.

What do we need to do differently to allow this?

next step is we'd like to be able to use an oversize round over bit to chain sweep the same - like will be a little smoother result.

Hello Scott, for this application swarf milling should work quite well, simply copy the edges that define your chamfer and choose them as your guide curves. assuming you purchased the proper options this type of milling should take only a minute to apply.
