Linking a Parameter with an Assembly Characteristic

Is is possible to use parameters to control the characteristics of a component? For example: I have a library item and I would like to control the manual index with a driver so that when I insert the item, along with the prompts for width, height, ect, I am also prompted for the index number. This would be a big time saver for me so that I don't have to open each library item and number it after the fact.

you can't with a parameter but you can with a catalog function of component library name text inside that file

Thanks for the response. I added "[INDEX]" for the name as you show but I am not quite sure how to get the catalog header setup correctly. What do I need to do in the catalog so that it links?

1.) type text in your model "INDEX"
2.) EDIT>> NAME then select the text and name it INDEX to link it to the catalog
3.)[INDEX] put this were ever you want that value to appear in your part/assembly characteristics
